Rugby Wrap Up in Observer Newspaper

Rugby Wrap Up, the show I edit for American TV, had another mention in The Observer newspaper on Sunday. USA has won the right to host the men’s Rugby World Cup in 2031 and women’s Rugby World Cup in 2033. Martin Pengelly, the news editor for Guardian US, has put together an article for the Observer, where he asked some of the leading names in American rugby for their views on what hosting the world cup in 2031 and 33 mean for the American game?

Matt McCarthy, the host of Rugby Wrap Up was among those asked to comment.

Major League Rugby is in its fifth season. Matt McCarthy covers it via his Rugby Wrap Up site and podcast. He said World Rugby’s “huge, game-changing investment in high schools, colleges, clubs, for men and women, sevens and 15s” would also “safeguard the future of Major League Rugby as a fully professional men’s 15s competition.

“The establishment of the pro league in Japan in the years before the 2019 World Cup shows what World Rugby knows must happen. Now the World Cups are coming to America, MLR simply cannot be allowed to fail.”

For me personally, this is fantastic news for the game in America. This will do wonders for Major League Rugby and I look forward to continuing to work on video content for TV and the web in the run up to 2031.
